Last year, it was Lagaan. This year, it is Devdas.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas has been selected as India's official entry at the 75th Academy Awards.

Rajkumar Santoshi's The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Karan Johar's Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham proved pale competition for this multi-million extravaganza based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhya's classic novel about tragic love.

Devdas opened to mixed reactions in India and a lukewarm response overseas. It did manage to impress the French glitterati at the Cannes Film Festival where it was screened in the out-of-competition category.

This year at the Oscars, Lagaan managed to make it in the final nominations but lost to Danis Tanovic's No Man's Land (Bosnia).

The big question is whether Devdas will be able to accomplish what Lagaan couldn’t.

What do you think? Does Devdas deserve an Oscar?

Don't Miss!
