Preity Zinta
Will Dil Hai Tumhaara be lucky for Preity?
Kundan Shah's latest film is aimed at the heartstrings

Sukanya Verma

"Kya Kehna was my first film. It was extremely special to me. Dil Hai Tumhaara is not my first film. But it is still very special to me," states Preity Zinta. The actress plays an author-backed role of the livewire, vivacious Shalu in Tips Films' Dil Hai Tumhaara.

The film also stars Rekha, Mahima Chaudhry, Arjun Rampal and Jimmy Shergill. Filmmaker Kundan Shah, (Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa), who collaborated with Tips Films' Kumar and Ramesh Taurani to direct the controversial albeit successful social drama Kya Kehna helms Dil Hai Tumhaara, too.

At a press meet at Mumbai's The Club, Thursday, Shah said, "Fortunately, I had the freedom to express myself [in DHT]. I hope this film works."

Preity reveals, "Kya Kehna was supposed to be directed by Honey Irani. That didn't happen. I was her first choice [for Kya Kehna]. Then Kundan Shah came in and he wanted to make the film with me. Similarly Dil Hai Tumhaara was to be made by another director. That didn't work out. Then he came on and the film went to Tips. I hope this proves lucky."

Dil Hai Tumhaara is about Preity and her relationship with her mother (Rekha) and elder sister (Mahima). The twist in the plot is Rampal, who turns out the bone of contention between the sisters.

Although Rekha, who plays mother to Mahima and Preity, was absent, the two made a point to mention her. "I was extremely lucky to work with Rekhaji. She is a lot of fun," said Zinta. Mahima remarked, "I wish Rekhaji was here. But Preity gave her so much trouble that now, it looks like she ate her up."

In a black T-shirt with an embossed Aquarius sign over a pair of jeans, Preity cut a ravishing picture with her frizzy golden brown hair, speaking without pausing for breath: "We had a great crew --- Arjun, Jimmy, Mahima. It was very important for me to like Mahima, because we are playing sisters and close to each other in the film. And it is very easy to like her. She is a great, great, great person to be with on the sets. Arjun is a complete psycho. *laughs* Jimmy is very sweet, dependable and quiet."

Arjun Rampal and Mahima Chaudhry in Dil Hai Tumhaara Mahima added, "Even if Kundanji he yells at you, he gifts you boxes of chocolates. If Preity and I look a pound heavier, it is the director's fault. Both the heroes in the film are extremely good-looking. I was the peacemaker on the sets, like my character Nimmi. I play a soft and gentle girl."

Rampal said, "I can't get luckier than being paired opposite Preity and Mahima. *laughs* I think what is special about Dev is that he is a complete wacko. This is the first time I have tried my hand at comedy. This film touched my heart. Hopefully it will do the same for the viewers too."

Shergill (Mohabbatein, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai), plays a ventriloquist in DHT. Apparently, the actor underwent training while preparing for his role. He said, "I laughed the maximum while working on this film. It feels great to be part of this project."

Dil Hai Tumhaara is scheduled to release September 6.
