'She conveys so much through her songs'

Javed Akhtar

TODAY the name Lata Mangeshkar is no longer a noun but an adjective.

Actually three of them: Perfect. Best. Immortal.

She brings out the emotions best in my songs. Though, admittedly, she has not sung many of them.

When I started writing lyrics, she had stopped singing on a regular basis, only singing a few songs.

She sang just about 12 to 15 of my songs. I particularly like the way she rendered the sad version of Sagar kinare. She sang it so beautifully.

As also the number from Silsila -- Yeh kahan aa gaye hum, tere saath saath chalte. There's a line in this song which goes, Huyi aur bhi mulayam, meri shyam dhalte dhalte (the evening became even softer as it faded).

I wonder whether any singer in the world could sing mulayam more meaningfully than the way Lata Mangeshkar sang it.

In Godmother, the song, Maati re maati, has a line which says, Thak gayi hoon ladte ladte apne jeevan se (I'm tired of battling with life).

You can feel the drain, you can feel the fatigue. Here, you think, is someone who is really weary of life.

You don't feel the need to discuss the lyrics with her -- the moment you give her the lyrics, she knows what to do. She conveys so much through her songs.

We are so lucky to have her.
