'Most people become complacent. Not Amitabh'

    Kader Khan

I started acting with Adalat, a Narinder Bedi film in which Amitabh Bachchan had a double role. After that I got to indulge in my passion, writing.

I wrote (scripts for) films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Mr Natwarlal, Naseeb, Laawaris... so many popular Amitabh Bachchan starrers.

I was the writer for the rival camps of Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra. Both used to say Amitabh is mine and Kader Khan is mine. And I used to say you're both in my camp!

I shared a fabulous relationship with Amitabh. He is one actor who gives complete satisfaction to the writer in me by acting out what I'd written so beautifully. He has this quality of giving himself over to the writer completely.

I used to record the dialogues for him and he'd execute them wonderfully well. And he's such a good speaker!

In our industry stars learn to dance, to do action etc, but no one pays attention to how their dialogues sound. And I'm not talking of a base voice only. There are many speakers who lack base, yet they sound clear as bell.

Amitabh was very good at it. People talk for the sake of talking. They don't realise that each word has meaning and nuance, and can be very effective communication. Listen to a Dilip Kumar or a Meena Kumari speak and see how they can keep you listening.

AMITABH has this innate talent for speech, but he also trained himself. He is an actor who has put in effort in all aspects of acting. The potential existed in him and he refined it.

Most people become complacent. But not Amitabh. He works hard and is sincere to his profession.

It was a wonderful time we had together.

Kader Khan spoke to Lata Khubchandani
