The crowds are here to see Devyani

April 21, 2009
Barring a line, there is nothing about her agenda and manifesto for the constituency. She sticks to the emotional line of the Congress leadership hurting her father who only wants to serve the people of Sidhi and how she will carry on his mantle.

Despite Veena touching the right chords, the confusion that the Congressmen speak about is evident in them too. Asked why they are attending the meeting, answers varied from "to see Kunwarsaheb's daughter" to "to see Didasahib (which is also how Veena is addressed by some)".

For a majority it is not even these two reasons. They are there to see Veena's daughter-in-law Devyani. A niece of former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundara Raje and BJP MP Yashodara Raje (her mother is their elder sister), she is also Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia's first cousin. Devyani Rana was cited as a reason why Nepal's crown prince Dipendra killed his father King Birendra, mother Queen Aishwarya, who refused to accept Devyani as his wife, along with his brother and sister, in 2001.
