The refugees fear for their lives

April 13, 2009

Yadav is also scared to move back to his village. He too fears that he will be killed by the mobs. He had tried to return home once, but was threatened by a local Hindu leader who asked him to go back to the relief camp. On April 8 he found a new home in the Raikia relief camp.

"The BDO came with a number of policemen and forced us to pack our belongings and move to the Raikia relief camp." 'That way it will be easier for you to go and vote on April 16', district officials told him when he had protested the move.

A day earlier, Kandhamal District Magistrate Krishan Kumar told rediff.com that refugees living in the Nuagam relief camp were shifted to Raikia to make it easier for them to vote.

Yadav was, however, not happy with this sudden shift to Raikia though his polling booth is now just three km away. He will be taken there and brought back under police protection.
