'What my party says, my party does!'

April 7, 2009
On taking to the dais, Mayawati begins with saying that her party is fielding a candidate in every parliamentary seat in Bihar -- all alone, with no alliance.

"We have given tickets to people from all castes and communities. Do not give your vote to the BJP and its allies or the RJD and its allies. Only vote for the BSP, you must understand this," she says as she begins her speech.

"Since Independence, for 61 years, you have been ruled either by the Congress and its allies or the BJP and its allies. These parties have not been able to remove poverty or unemployment. Not only are the farmers and laboureres of Bihar unhappy because of this but the upper castes are also suffering."

Holding the reservation carved out for the scheduled castes, backwards and Dalits in UP as a beacon, she says she will work for similar reservation when her party comes to power at the Centre. She speaks about reservation for backward Muslims and says she has written a letter to the central government to provide reservation for Dalit Christians.

"We are also in favour of reservation for the upper castes who are economically weak when we come to power, I promise reservation to people in these sections."

Cautioning those who sit listening to her, she says: "Closer to the election, don't get waylaid by other parties, but come and vote for the elephant. Because what my party says, my party does!"
