The 15-year run in Bihar of her husband, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad, seemed to be coming to an end on Sunday as the National Defence Alliance emerged as the largest pre-poll coalition in the state after the counting of votes.

Rabri Devi, who was accompanied by her husband, handed over her resignation to Governor Buta Singh, who asked her to continue till alternative arrangements were made.

In her letter she said she was resigning because the RJD, which secured 75 seats in the 243-member assembly, had failed to secure complete mandate.

Lalu Prasad said the RJD legislature party would meet on Tuesday to elect its leader and would hold consultations with "secular parties" before staking claim to form the government.
