Why Chautala did not vote

February 03, 2005 18:00 IST

Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala did not cast his vote on Thursday citing a ban imposed on his voting in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls by the then Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh.

"The ban has not been lifted so how can I exercise my right to franchise," he said, adding that if the EC wants to deprive him of his fundamental right to vote he can't do anything about it.

Chautala has not voted in any election, including the assembly polls, since then, INLD sources said.

Official sources in Chandigarh said that Chautala's name did figure in the voting list.
