Jharkhand leader begins fast urging Sonia

May 18, 2004 20:08 IST

The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress on Tuesday urged Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to accept prime ministerial responsibility.

JPCC women's president Pratibha Pandey began a fast at Congress Bhavan requesting Sonia to reconsider her decision.

Pandey said she would continue with her fast till a positive decision was taken by Sonia Gandhi.

"She should not care what the BJP says, the mandate was in her favour and she should accept the responsibility," Pandey added.

The JPCC spokesman, Sailesh Sinha, said the people had given her mandate and she had been instrumental in routing the BJP-led NDA government.

Stating that the entire Congress family was solidly behind her, he said all leaders would launch agitation in the event of Gandhi not becoming the prime minister.
