Bollywood star Govinda (Congress) defeated Union Petroleum Minister Ram Naik by 48,271 votes.

When Govinda was announced as the Congress candidate, critics said that he was an an actor and good on screen alone! However, soon people screamed Govinda ala re ala. His charm, glamour and Virar Ka Chokra image worked with the voters.
