Kumar Bangarappa returns to Congress

March 26, 2004 19:49 IST

Nearly a fortnight after he, along with his father and former Karnataka chief minister S Bangarappa, quit Congress to join the BJP, Kumar Bangarappa on Friday returned to the party saying, "It was very suffocating for me emotionally in BJP."

Announcing his decision in the presence of Chief Minister S M Krishna, Bangarappa told reporters that he had tried in vain to persuade his father also to rejoin the Congress.

Asked as to why he joined the BJP, Bangarappa said he became 'emotional' when his father joined the BJP as he was the person who brought him into politics.

Later it appeared that 'we were not at all suited for the BJP', he said adding, "I am happy to be back home. Nobody in the BJP has a vision for the youth."

He thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi and S M Krishna for allowing him to rejoin the party. Kumar was a cabinet minister under Krishna.

His father has denied him a BJP ticket to seek reelection. He did not rule out campaigning against his father who is seeking re-election from the Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency.
