I did not want to contest: Vajpayee

March 20, 2004 23:01 IST

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday said he did not want to contest the forthcoming polls.

But "if I had shied away from my responsibility the country could have headed towards anarchy", he said in Mumbai while launching the Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign for Lok Sabha polls.

The PM said if he had failed to shoulder his responsibility then the country would have gone into the hands of inept people. "That is why I changed my decision and decided to contest."
