April 16, 2004 14:39 IST

Popular television actress Smriti Irani will be the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate from Chandni Chowk in Delhi against Kapil Sibal of the Congress.

Irani's name has been approved by BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu,  party spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

Irani became a household name after her role of an ideal bahu (daughter-in-law) in the popular TV serial, Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

Naqvi also announced that former Indian cricketer, Navjot Singh Sidhu, will be the party's candidate in the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency.
