Can Sonia sing 'Vande Mataram'?

April 10, 2004 10:04 IST

Describing the Congress party as a burden on the nation, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday continued his attack on its president Sonia Gandhi's foreign origins.

"The nation today is yearning for an experienced and visionary prime minister who can help India gain prestige in the world," he said and asked if Gandhi was capable of providing such leadership.

Modi was addressing an election rally in Vyara in the Mandvi Lok Sabha constituency in Gujarat.

Taking a dig at Gandhi's knowledge of Hindi, Modi said: "I have challenged her to sing 'Vande Mataram' without reading it out from a piece paper." He then added that even a Class III student of Vyara would have the lines by heart.

"Can we have a prime minister who cannot sing 'Vande Mataram?" Modi asked.
