NTR's daughter enters poll fray

April 07, 2004 16:36 IST

Telugu Desam Party president and former chief minister N T Rama Rao's eldest daughter, Purandareswari, on Wednesday entered the poll fray on a Congress ticket.

She will take on film producer D Rama Naidu in the Bapatla Lok Sabha constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

Purandareswari is trying her electoral fortunes from a party that NTR held in contempt.

"The present day TDP does not carry any of my father's ideals and my contest on Congress ticket need not be viewed as a serious issue," the articulate director of the Hyderabad Institute of Gem and Jewellery said.

Naidu is a distant relative of Purandareswari and belongs to the same Daggupati clan.

Her husband Dr Daggupati Venkateshwara Rao, who split the TDP, will contest from the Parachuru assembly segment of Bapatla seat.
