Nagaland: DAN invited to form government

March 05, 2003 16:23 IST

Nagaland Governor Shyamal Dutta on Wednesday invited Neiphiu Rio, leader of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland, to form the next government in the state.

The swearing in ceremony would be held on Thursday, Raj Bhavan sources said.

Soon after Rio, 53, was unanimously elected leader of the five-party conglomerate, DAN leaders drove to Raj Bhavan to officially stake claim to form the government.

Octogenarian Hokise Sema, Bharatiya Janata Party legislature party leader and former chief minister was elected DAN chairman.

Rio had earlier been elected leader of the Nagaland People's Front legislature party. The NPF with 19 seats is the major constituent of DAN.

The National Democratic Movement with five MLAs was also formally inducted into the alliance.

In the 60-member assembly, DAN has eight MLAs, NPF 19, BJP 6, Janata Dal (United) 3, NDM 5, Samata 1 and four Independents.
