December 1, 2003:

Watched by a policeman, women queue up outside a polling station in Delhi to elect a new assembly for the National Capital Territory.

Elections were also held in three other states -- Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh -- on Monday. Some 94 million people were eligible to vote in these four states, all ruled by the Congress; more than 100,000 polling booths were set up.

The polls will help assess the popularity of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in opposition in all these states but ruling at the Centre. The general election is scheduled for next year.
