Candidate campaigns on TV on poll day

Election 2002 Onkar Singh in Jammu

In a clear violation of the model code of conduct, a cable television channel telecast a message by Hansraj Dogra, an independent candidate, during the second phase of assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

In the 15-minute-long message, aired by Siti Cable, Dogra, contesting from Jammu West, was seen pleading with people to vote for him.

Following the telecast, the Deputy Commissioner and Electoral Officer of Jammu region, Rohit Kansal, initiated action against the channel.

"We have received complaints and we have already initiated action against the erring local television channel," Kansal told rediff.com

Officials from Siti Cable were not available for comment. "Sir, I am not able to comprehend what you want to know from me. I have come on duty only a few minutes back," said a lady on phone from the office of the cable network.
