All set for second phase of polling
in Jammu and Kashmir

Election 2002 All is set for the crucial second phase of Jammu and Kashmir elections covering 28 constituencies in the three districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Jammu with security tightened amidst heightened militant activities.

Security personnel have taken up positions at the designated 2,099 polling stations to facilitate the electorate to exercise their franchise fearlessly.

Over 2.1 million (21 lakh) voters will decide the fate of 263 candidates, including National Conference president and chief ministerial candidate Omar Abdullah from Ganderbal constituency and several ministers in the Farooq Abdullah cabinet.

Other prominent candidates include rebel National Conference candidates Aga Syed Mehmood and Mohammad Shafi Bhat.

In this phase, the main parties in the fray are the ruling National Conference, Congress, PDP, BJP and the Awami League.

Besides, the Samata Party, Shiv Sena and Lok Jan Shakti will be making their debut in Jammu and Kashmir in this round of polling.
