Hurriyat asks people not to vote, calls bandh on Sep 24

Election 2002

The Hurriyat Conference on Sunday asked people to stay away from polling booths and observe a complete shutdown on September 24, when voting from the second phase of assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir takes place.

"We should prove to the international community that we are not interested in elections...we want resolution of the Kashmir issue," a Hurriyat statement released in Srinagar said.

Terming the assembly election a futile exercise, the 23-party separatist conglomerate alleged that the security forces were compelling the people to vote and those who do not fall in line were being harassed.
