Campaigning for second phase ends amidst escalated violence

Election 2002

Amidst a surge in violence by militants, the curtain came down on Sunday on campaigning for the second phase of assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir.

The second phase, polling for which is scheduled for Tuesday, will cover 28 constituencies spread across three districts -- Srinagar, Budgam and Jammu.

On the last of campaigning very few rallies were held, candidates preferring the low-key door-to-door contact with voters.

Terrorist violence in the state has seen sharp escalation with Pakistan-backed militant groups targeting candidates.

State's Tourism Minister Sakina Itoo was attacked twice in the space of two days.

Five activists of the ruling National Conference, the Communist Party of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party were killed and a Congress rally was attacked by militants in the last 48 hours.

The residence of a National Conference MLA, who is contesting from Shopian, also came under fire from the militants.

The army has killed 13 ultras in different parts of the state since Saturday night.
