Kashmir valley observes bandh to protest polls

The Kashmir valley on Monday observed a complete bandh in response to the dawn-to-dusk shutdown called by the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference against the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election.

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front activists led by their acting chairman Javed Ahmed Mir staged a demonstration outside their party headquarters at Maisuma in Srinagar raising slogans like 'No election, no selection. We want freedom'.

The police and paramilitary forces dispersed the protestors, who did not put up any resistance, official sources said.

Mir, however, said he was roughed up and injured by the Border Security Force.

Shops and business establishments in Srinagar and other major towns of the Kashmir valley remained closed and all modes of transport went off the roads.

The streets wore a deserted look as people remained indoors fearing trouble as all militant outfits had called for a boycott of the election.
