EC not concerned about
reaction of diplomats

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Election Commission said it was not interested in finding out the reaction of a group of foreign diplomats who visited some of the twenty-three constituencies that went to polls on Monday in the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election.

The envoys can report to their respective governments and also share their impressions with the media, Deputy Election Commissioner Sayan Chatterjee told rediff.com.

"In all, special passes had been issued to 28 foreign diplomats and sixteen of them made it to J&K during the first phase of the polls," Chatterjee said.

Commenting on the first phase of polling, he said that a 44% turnout was no mean achievement.

However, Chatterjee admitted that the commission had received large number of complaints from various constituencies.

"Deputy Election Commissioner K G Rao, who has been camping in Srinagar, disposed off the complaints," he said.

A repoll has been ordered in two polling booths in Pattan and Mendhar constituencies, respectively, Chatterjee said. "While in the first case, the electronic voting machine was faulty, in the other, the EVM was smashed in an attempt to manipulate the result," he said.
