Heavy firing at Lone's funeral in Sogam

Panic gripped hundreds of people attending the funeral of assassinated Jammu and Kashmir Law Minister Mustaq Ahmed Lone in Sogam, Kupwara, on Thursday as militants fired on a military convoy.

The sound of grenade explosions and firing threw the security of the dignitaries, including Defence Minister George Fernandes, J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, his ministers and the National Conference president Omar Abdullah, into a tizzy.

The J&K chief minister said "These killings and attacks are meant to disrupt the poll in the state but you will find no change in our resolve to go ahead with the process."

On whether Lone's killing was a security lapse, Abdullah said, "Our enemy is planning to carry out these attacks and we are also planning to prevent them."
