Congress-PDP 'mollycoddling militancy': BJP

Election 2002

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday criticised the People's Democratic Party-Congress coalition alleging it was 'less interested' in the development of Jammu and Kashmir and 'more interested in mollycoddling militancy'.

Referring to the Common Minimum Programme of the alliance, party spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also alleged that Jammu and Ladakh had been 'largely ignored'.

But he said the Centre would extend all support to the state government for development and fighting militancy.

"But the J&K government has to ensure that none of its actions encourage the separatists," he said.

On Uttar Pradesh, he said the Mayawati government was not facing any threat from dissident legislators. "The Samajwadi Party, whose dreams of coming to power was shattered, is now trying to resuscitate that dream. It is power hungry and its dreams will continue to elude it," he said.

He accused the SP general secretary Amar Singh of being in Lucknow to incite independent legislators to topple the Uttar Pradesh government.

"We don't have to protect the Mayawati government because the legislators are fed up of midterm polls."

He also welcomed the Election Commission's announcement of the date for polling in Gujarat.

He claimed the BJP had always favoured election instead of President's rule being declared in the state.
