Two defeated candidates threaten to
sue EC

Election 2002

Two independent candidates, who lost from the valley, on Saturday charged the Election Commission with not preventing rigging of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

Abdul Haq and Ghulam Qadir Mir, who were defeated from Lolab and Kupwara constituencies, have threatened to take the EC to court.

"Several gross irregularities were committed during the poll process, which were brought to the notice of the Election Commission observers from time to time," Haq said in Srinagar.

But the observers did not heed media reports and photographs showing minors casting votes, he said, terming the EC's attitude as "unfortunate".

The two said they would approach the judiciary if the commission failed to uphold justice. "We do not even mind going to the people and exposing the so-called free and fair elections," they said.

Asked why they had taken such a long time to raise these issues, they said, "We had been collecting documents to file a petition in the court."
