Manmohan Singh calls on J&K Governor

Senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh on Monday called on Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chander Saxena amid a political stalemate between Congress and PDP over government formation in the state.

While Raj Bhavan spokesman termed it as a courtesy call, the meeting assumes significance in the wake of speculation that the party may stake claim to form the government with the support of independents.

Singh, who arrived in Srinagar on Sunday for discussion with PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed on forming a coalition government, was accompanied by state PCC chief Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Singh has also met Panthers Party chief Bhim Singh, who pledged his party's support to the Congress.

Congress sources said Singh briefed the governor about his talks with the PDP and efforts being made to facilitate a coalition government in the state.
