The Congress on Friday said it was up to the Mufti Mohammed Sayeed-led People's Democratic Front to end the political impasse in Jammu and Kashmir.
"The imposition of Governor's rule in the state is temporary and the extension till October 21 given to political parties to try and form a government still holds... now the onus to end the impasse lies with PDP," Congress leader Saifuddin Soz said in Srinagar.
He said J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Nabi Azad should be the chief minister and the PDP should actively participate in the governance of the state.
"PDP will have a position equal to that of the Congress, almost, in the possible government and we will try to work on a mutually agreed agenda in the larger public interest," he said.
"There will be a sense of achievement for PDP also," Soz said.
Soz said his party had given a secular image to Jammu by defeating "communal forces" like the Bharatiya Janata Party in the region. "That achievement cannot be altogether ignored."
He also acknowledged PDP's performance in the polls in which it defeated important leaders of the National Conference in the Kashmir valley.
Asked about PDP's manifesto, which called for repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act in the state and disbanding the Special Operations Group of the police, believed to be another stumbling block in the formation of an alliance, Soz said these could be worked out later.
