We need more time, Azad tells governor

Election 2002 Basharat Peer in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday met Governor G C Saxena and discussed with him the issue of government formation in the state.

"I told him that our talks with the PDP [People's Democratic Party] are still on and no concrete decision has been reached yet," Azad said after the meeting.

He said he had requested the governor to give the political parties some more time. The term of the assembly will end on October 17.

Earlier, the Congress leader had met PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed in an effort to resolve the issue of chief ministership.

"I told Mufti sahib that I am going to meet the governor and brief him about whatever we have decided. He insisted that we should keep talking," Azad added.

He said he agreed with the Mufti's suggestion of continuing dialogue, as the Congress was interested in a stable government, which would include the PDP, Communist Party of India-Marxist and independents.

There were indications that in case the PDP did not agree to a Congress-led government, the latter might stake the claim to form the government with the help of independents.

"If the PDP does not stop being stubborn, we will find some other way. But we have to form a government. Governor's rule will only add to the problems of the people," said Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, the CPI-M leader who is heading the People's Democratic Forum, an alliance of seven independents.

Tarigami said he would announce on Wednesday afternoon whether the PDF would support the Congress.
