Victorious rebel candidate rejoins
National Conference

Election 2002 Shahjahan Dar, a rebel who won Zadibal seat in Srinagar as an independent, on Monday rejoined the National Conference, raising its strength to 29 in the 87-member assembly.

NC leader Farooq Abdullah, who met Dar at his residence, said, "Shahjahan is our man only. He was upset over certain things and we have clarified it."

Asked whether the NC would stake claim to form the government, Abdullah said, "People are coming together and a caravan is in making. Let us see up to what point we go... Hope is the only thing that one should not loose. We have not lost hope yet."

Dar said after the meeting that the NC had made some commitments to him.

"I was a National Conference worker and let me place this on record that it were my party workers in the constituency who worked for me and ensured my win," he said.

Dar said he had rejoined the NC as "it was the demand of the people who had voted for me".

Asked whether the Congress or the People's Democratic Party had approached him for support, he said, "They did. But they are parties without any base. So there is no point in joining them."
