Panthers Party with Cong only if CM is from Jammu

Election 2002

The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party on Monday decided to extend support to the Congress only if the latter's chief ministerial candidate is from the Jammu region.

JKNPP president Bhim Singh said after meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi, "I told her that if the Congress proposes its chief ministerial candidate from Jammu division, and already has the support of 40 MLAs, then four legislators of the JKNPP will extend their support to the party."

Asked if the JKNPP would support a government headed by the People's Democratic Party, Singh said the JKNPP would prefer to sit in opposition rather than join the government.

Singh said he also apprised Gandhi about the situation in the state and the "permutation and combination" of the government formation, including his meeting with the state governor.

Asked if he would consider himself a chief ministerial candidate, Singh said, "If the Congress and the PDP fail to form a government, I am ready to provide a viable, secular, and democratic alternative with the support of all the 87 MLAs."
