Independents ask Congress, PDP to
make up mind

Election 2002 Onkar Singh in Srinagar

The People's Democratic Forum, an outfit floated by newly elected independent legislators, has said it may not support the Congress and the People's Democratic Party if the two continue to haggle over the issue of chief ministership in Jammu and Kashmir.

"We would advise both the Congress and the PDP to give up their stiff stands and reach an agreement at the earliest possible time and form a new government in the state. The people of the state have given their verdict against the National Conference and the two parties must honour their commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir," a spokesman for the outfit told rediff.com in Srinagar on Monday.

"We have been waiting... What have the Congress and PDP done in these days. Nothing excepting claiming that the chief ministership should go their candidates. We are tired of waiting endlessly. We would be forced to revise our stand if the two parties do not behave," he said.

The Congress and the PDP are holding meetings in Srinagar on Monday afternoon where they are likely to elect leaders of their legislative parties.

"We are firmly behind Ghulam Nabi Azad, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress Committee," said Raman Bhalla, a legislator from Gandhi Nagar, Jammu.

"Dr Manmohan Singh and some other senior leaders are coming to Srinagar with Azad on Monday and thereafter we will hold a meeting of the MLAs where we are going to elect our new leader. Most probably it will be Azad saheb only," he said.

Mehbooba Mufti, vice-president of the PDP, told rediff.com in Srinagar that a meeting of party MLAs has been convened at her residence in Nowgam at 1500 IST. She refused to comment when asked who would be elected leader of the PDP legislature party.

But sources said the post would go to Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, her father.
