Four ministers defeated in Jammu division

Election 2002

Four ministers lost the race in Jammu as Congress won 14 seats in the division, where the results of 28 of the total 37 constituencies have been announced so far.

Ministers and National Conference nominees Ajat Shatru Singh, Surjeet Singh Slathia, Harbans Singh and Govind Ram were defeated, while Cabinet colleague Ajay Sadhotra, former ministers and Congress candidates Mangat Ram Sharma and Mula Ram and state Youth Congress president Yogesh Sawhney were among the winners.

The NC won five seats, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers' Party four, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party one each and independents three in the division.

In Udhampur, where results of all the seats were declared, JKNNP's Balwant Singh, Faqir Nath and Harshdev Singh won Udhampur, Chenani and Ramnagar. Congress's Jugal Kishore won Reasi, NC's Abdul Gani Malik Gulbgarh and independent Aijaz Ahmed Khan Gool Arnas.

In Kathua, the Congress bagged three seats -- Bani, Basoli and Hiranagar. In Doda, where results of two seats were declared, Chaman Lal of the NC bagged Ramban seat and Ghulam Mohammad Sarori of Congress bagged the Inderwal seat. In Rajouri, Congress's Ramesh Chander bagged Nowshera, Puran Singh (independent) bagged Dharhal and NC's Mohammad Aslam bagged Rajouri.

In Jammu district, Yogesh Sawhney bagged Jammu-East for Congress. Madan Lal Sharma, again of Congress, won Akhnoor, while Tarachand (Congress) bagged Chhamb, Raman Bhall bagged Gandhinagar, Mangat Ram Sharma bagged Jammu-West, Mula Ram Raipur won Dumana, Suman Bhagat won RS Pura and Garo Ram bagged Suchetgarh.

BJP's Jugal Kishore won Nagrota, JKNNP's Yashpaul bagged Samba, BSP's Manjeet Singh won Vijaypur and independent Ashwani Kumar won Bishnah. NC's Javed Ahmed Rana bagged Mendhar in Poonch, where results of two other seats are awaited.
