Farooq Abdullah to resign on Friday

Election 2002

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah will submit his resignation to Governor G C Saxena on Friday.

"I bow my head to the verdict of the people," he said after his party, the National Conference, received a drubbing in the just-concluded assembly election in the state.

He said an emergency meeting of his cabinet has been called on Friday after which he will submit his resignation to the governor.

Accepting his party's defeat in the election, Abdullah said the National Conference would now provide a healthy opposition.

He said the working committee of the party would meet shortly to look into the reasons for the defeat.
