DySP killed, two constables hurt in encounter with militants

Election 2002

A Deputy Superintendent of Police was killed and two constables injured on Thursday in an encounter with two militants in Kathua district, suspected to be behind the October one attack on a bus in which eight people were killed.

The two militants were killed after a fierce encounter, Inspector General of Police (Jammu zone) P L Gupta said.

He said a police team headed by DySP Jagtar Singh rushed to Sjandi Nala area in Hiranagar of Kathua district on a tip off about the presence of terrorists there.

As soon as they reached the spot, the militants fired upon them, killing Singh and injuring two policemen, he said.

The injured cops have been rushed to a hospital, he added.

He said the killed militants might be from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba. He added that several LeT modules were unearthed in Jammu recently.
