Dissidents raise their heads in Gujarat,
Cong MLA to contest as independent

Discontentment is brewing within the state BJP and Congress activists following denial of tickets to some sitting MLAs with supporters of former minister of state for home Haren Pandya taking out a rally in Gandhinagar to protest the non-inclusion of his name in the second list of candidates released by the BJP on Wednesday.

Pandya was an MLA from the Ellisbridge constituency in Ahmedabad.

"I do not know why my name was not included in the second list. BJP leaders at the Centre are all seasoned politicians and will take the appropriate decision at the appropriate time," Pandya told PTI.

BJP workers are also demanding that former MP Gopalsinh Solanki be fielded from Godhra instead of Bajrang Dal leader Harish Bhatt.

In Vadodara, BJP workers continued their dharna and relay hunger strike for the second day to protest against the decision to field Harish Bhatt from Godhra.

In other developments, supporters of former urban development minister Parmanand Khattar threatened to launch an agitation if he was not renominated while former MLA Gabhaji Thakor resigned from the primary membership of the BJP after being asked to change his constituency.

In the opposition camp, some Congress leaders from Rajkot objected to the candidates being given tickets from Rajkot I (Manoharsinh Jadeja), Rajkot II (Kashmira Nathwani) and Rajkot rural (Shanta Chavda) constituencies.

Reports from Surat said Congress workers have demanded change of the candidate for Surat City (West).

Meanwhile, Bhima Patel, sitting Congress MLA from Deodhar assembly segment in Banaskantha district, has decided to contest the election as independent, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Hasmukh Patel told PTI in Ahmedabad on Wednesday night.

Three senior party leaders have extended support to Patel, he said adding Patel and the three others may be expelled from the party for their anti-party activities.

The Congress has fielded Keshaji Chauhan from Deodhar.
