Gujarat government refuses permission
to VHP yatra

Following the ban imposed by the Election Commission, the Gujarat government on Thursday refused permission to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to take out its yatra on November 17.

On instructions from the commission, Panchmahal district Collector Manoj Agarwal on Thursday overturned the permission given by the sub-divisional magistrate of Godhra, from where the yatra was to begin.

"On Wednesday, the SDM granted the permission, but on Thursday we received instructions from the EC and the earlier order now stands null and void," Agarwal said.

Earlier, the VHP said it will go ahead with the yatra.

"I want to tell the entire nation that there will be no violence at all during our yatra," he said. "It is a yatra of saints and the religious freedom of expression should not be curbed," VHP international general-secretary Pravin Togadia said in Ahmedabad.
