Union Cabinet recommends President's
rule in Uttar Pradesh

Election 2002 Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Union Cabinet decided on Thursday to recommend President's rule in Uttar Pradesh and keep the state assembly in suspended animation, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said.

The Cabinet took this decision at an hour-long meeting presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The meeting discussed the report sent by Governor Vishnukant Shastri on Wednesday, recommending the imposition of President's rule in the state.

Shastri made this recommendation following the inability of the various political parties in the state to come together to provide a stable government after last month's assembly election.
