Amita Singh wins in Amethi

Election 2002

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Amita Singh won the Amethi assembly seat, defeating her Congress rival Ashish Shukla by 18,765 votes.

The Congress held the seat earlier.

Singh -- former Indian badminton player Amita Kulkarni - is married to controversial Amethi royal Sanjay Singh. Her first husband Indian badminton ace Syed Modi was killed in July 1988.

Amethi is represented in the Lok Sabha by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
