Congress gets a simple majority in Punjab

Election 2002

The Congress and its ally, the Communist Party of India, have won a simple majority in Punjab, winning 62 of the total 117 seats. The ruling SAD-BJP combine has won 45 seats, while nine seats have gone to others.

Bibi Jagir Kaur has been declared elected from Bholath. She defeated her nearest rival Sukhpal Singh Khera of the Congress by a margin of over 15,000 votes. SAD retains the seat.

Parkash Singh Bhatti of the Congress declared elected from Balluana (reserve) defeating his nearest rival Gurtej Singh of SAD by a margin of 4318 votes. Congress wrests the seat.

Rural Development Minister Nirmal Singh Kahlon lost by a margin of 6,581 votes to his nearest Congress rival Sukhjinder Singh from Fatehgarh Churian. Congress wrests the seat.

Higher Education Minister Master Mohan Lal of the BJP defeated by 17,354 votes by Ashok Kumar of the Congress at Pathankot. The Congress wrests the seat.

Transport Minister and SAD candidate Raghbir Singh defeated by nearest Congress rival Rana Gurji Singh by a margin of 10,000 votes at kapurthala. Congress wrests the seat.

Former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal of the Congress declared elected from Lehragaga defeating her nearest rival Niranjan Singh of the SAD by a margin of 6353 votes. Congress retains the seat.

Senior BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla defeated by Prof Darbari Lal of the Congress at Amritsar by 6171 votes. Congress wrests the seat.

Ramesh Dogra of the Congress declared elected from Dasuya defeating his nearest rival Ram Parkash of the BJP by a margin of 12,083 votes. Congress retains the seat.

Kanwaljit Singh Lalli of the Congress declared elected from Adampur defeating his nearest rival Sarabjit Singh Makkar of the SAD by a margin of 6800 votes. Congress retains the seat.

Capt Amarinder Singh of the Congress declared elected from Patiala Town defeating his nearest rival Sarup Singh Sehgal of the SAD by a margin of 27,000 votes. The Congress wrests the seat

Avtar Henry of the Congress declared elected from Jalandhar North defeating his nearest rival Suresh Sehgal by a margin of 22468 votes. The Congress retains the seat.

Gora Singh of SAD declared elected from Nathana defeating his nearest rival Jasmer Singh of the Congress by a margin of 3502 votes. SAD retains the seat.

Kanwarpal singh (congress) declared elected from nangal (65) defeating his nearest rival and state minister madan mohan mittal by 15,963 votes. Congress wrests the seat.

Surinder Kumar Dawar of the Congress declared elected from Ludhiana defeating his nearest rival Satpal Gosain of the bjp by a margin of 13,000 votes. Congress wrests the seat.

Raj Kumar Gupta of the Congress declared elected from Jalandhar Central defeating his nearest rival and Minister of Medical Education Manoranjan Kalia of the BJP by a margin of 11,000 votes. Congress wrests the seat.

Gurjan Singh of the CPI declared elected from Pakka Kalan defeating his nearest rival Makkhan Singh of SAD by a margin of 1700 votes. CPI wrests the seat.

Succha Singh Chottepur of the Panthic Morcha declared elected from Dhariwal defeating his nearest rival and PWD minister Sucha Singh Langah of SAD by a margin of 82 votes. Panthic morcha wrests the seat.

Tirlochan Singh of the Congress declared elected from Banga defeating his nearest rival Mohan Lal of the BSP by a margin of 3,655 votes. Congress wrests the seat.

Minister of State for Agriculture Gulzar Singh Ranike of SAD declared elected from Attari defeating his nearest rival Rattan Singh of the Congress by a margin of 22,000 votes. SAD wrests this seat.

Raj Khurana of the Congress declared elected from Rajpura defeating his nearest rival Balramji Das Tandon of the BJP by a margin of 16,000 votes. Congress wrests the seat.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal of SAD defeated by his nearest rival Jagjit Singh of the Congress from Kartarpur by a margin of 4,000 votes. Congress retains the seat.

Mantar Singh Brar of SAD declared elected from Kot Kapura defeating his nearest rival Vibha Sharma of the Congres by a margin of 1,500 votes. SAD wrests the seat.

Desh Raj Thunga of SAD declared elected from Gardhiwala defeating his nearest rival Pawan Kumar Aditya of the Congress by a margin of 8,000 votes. SAD retains the seat.

Kewal Krishan of the Congress declared elected from Mukerian defeating his nearest rival Harnesh Shankar of the BJP by a margin of 9063 votes. The congress wrests the seat.

Tikshan Sood of the BJP declared elected from Hoshiarpur defeating his nearest rival Naresh Thakur of the Ccongress by a margin of 308 votes. BJP retains this seat.

Mohinder Singh Kaypee of the Congress declared elected from Jalandhar (south) defeating his nearest rival Bhagat Chunni Lal by a margin of 2,000 votes. The Congress wrests the seat.

Minister of State for Higher Education Balbir Singh Maini of SAD declared elected from Tanda defeating his nearest rival Sangat Singh of the Congress by a margin of 2,527 votes. SAD retains the seat.

Gurkamal Kaur of the Congress declared elected from Jalandhar Cantt defeating her nearest rival Paramjit Singh Raipur by a margin of 10,800 votes. Congress retains the seat.

Surinder Singla the Congress declared elected from Bathinda defeating his nearest rival C L Garg of SAD by a margin of 13,000 votes. The Congress wrests the seat.

O P Soni (Independent) declared elected from Amritsar (west) defeating his nearest rival Rajindar Singh of the NCP by a margin of 20,000 votes. Soni retains the seat.

Avinash Khanna of the BJP declared elected from Garhshankar defeating his nearest rival Malkiat Singh of the CPI by a margin of 6,000 votes. BJP wrests the seat.
