Another Anantnag candidate escapes militant attack

Mohammad Altaf, Awami League candidate for the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, and People's Democratic Party politician Mohammad Shafi Banday escaped attempts on their lives while a village headman was killed in a mine blast in Kashmir since last evening.

An official spokesman said extremists detonated a powerful improvised explosive device at Village Janwari in Anantnag district when Altaf's vehicle was passing through the area this afternoon.

Altaf, however, escaped unhurt. His guards opened fire in retaliation, injuring a girl.

Altaf was on his way to address an election rally in a nearby village. Polling in Anantnag will be held on October 4.

The spokesman also said terrorists fired at PDP leader Shafi Banday's vehicle at Wanpora in Pulwama district last evening. Banday too escaped unhurt.

Militants also hurled a hand grenade at the vehicle of the Tral station house officer at Diver last evening. But the grenade missed the target and exploded harmlessly on the roadside.

Another grenade exploded at the Anantnag bus stand last evening without causing any damage, the spokesman informed.
