Maharashtra minister arrested following murder

Maharashtra Minister of State for Revenue Udayanraje Bhosale was arrested by the Satara police today following the murder of a Zilla Parishad councillor Sharad Baban Leve early on Saturday.

Bhosale, who is a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from the Satara assembly seat faces his uncle Abheysinh Raje Bhosale, who is the Nationalist Congress Party candidate from the constituency. Leve was an NCP member. He was killed at around 0200 hours this morning. Six other NCP workers were seriously injured in the incident.

Satara Collector Anil Digekar informed state Chief Electoral Officer Dr D K Shankaran about the incident. Dr Shankaran confirmed the minister's arrest.

Sources said Leve and some NCP workers were attacked by swords. He died on the spot. He had been elected unopposed in the last Zilla Parishad election. Political rivalry is stated to be the cause of the killing, sources added. The situation in Satara is reported to be tense.
