Sonia files nomination for Amethi

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today filed her nomination papers for Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh amid much fanfare. A large crowd outside the collectorate showered gulal and rose petals as she arrived there along with her son Rahul. People clapped and cheered all the time she was in the office.

Rahul in a white kurta-paijama stood besides Sonia as she signed the papers at 1403 hours before Returning Officer Anurag Srivatav. She filed four sets of papers. Sonia Gandhi took the oath, ''solemnly affirming'' faith and allegiance to the Constitution, in English.

The nominations were proposed and seconded by Amethi MLA Ram Harsh Singh and local leaders Shiv Lal Pasi,.Ram Sevak Dhubi and Haji Sultan, according to Salman Khurshid, president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. A large number of media persons, including those from international organisations, were present on the occasion.

Sonia Gandhi is also contesting from Bellary in Karnataka. In this traditional seat of the Gandhi family, Sonia's main rival is Dr Sanjay Singh, a friend-turned-foe and once the main accused in the murder of Syed Modi, the ace badminton player.

Congress party general secretary Sushil Kumar Shinde, Salman Khurshid, Mohsina Kidwai, Pramod Tewari and leader of the Congress Legislature Party and former UP minister Deepa Kaul were present on the occasion.
