JD-U candidate from Anantnag escapes bid on life

Former Union minister Mohammad Maqbool Dar escaped an attempt on his life by militants at Shelinar in Pulwama district of south Kashmir this afternoon.

Official sources said an unspecified number of militants attacked the vehicle of Dar , Janata Dal-United candidate from Anantnag, with automatic weapons. Dar's security guards immediately fired back to foil the militants' attempt.

Dar escaped unhurt in the attack, sources said, and added that one police constable was injured in the firing.

The attack came when the Election Commission issued fresh notification today for the Lok Sabha repoll in Anantnag, which had been adjourned following the death of Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Ghulam Hyder Noorani in south Kashmir in a land mine blast on Tuesday.

Besides Dar, state revenue minister Ali Mohammad Naik and Communist Party of India-M leader Mohammad Yousuf Targami are among 17 candidates in the fray. The BJP has been given seven days to file the papers of its new candidate.
