EC gets Anantnag returning officer's report

The Election Commission will decide on a fresh poll date for the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency after considering the report of the Returning Officer which was received by it in New Delhi today. The BJP candidate for the seat Ghulam Hyder Noorani was killed in a mine blast yesterday.

Anantnag was scheduled to go to the polls on September 18 along with Baramullah in the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Commission sources said the Anantnag RO had sent his report as per Section 52 of the Representation of Peoples Act 1951 which requires the RO to adjourn the poll and report the facts to the EC and the appropriate authorities.

Once a fresh poll date is decided a notice will be issued to the party concerned (in this case the BJP) to name a new candidate, they added. The poll process for the other candidates would remain undisturbed.
