Mamata elected leader of Trinamul parliamentary party

Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee was today elected the leader of the parliamentary party at a meeting of the newly elected MPs of the party.

Banerjee, who later briefed newsmen, said Sudip Bandopadhyay has been elected as the chief whip of the party and added that a letter stating the party's support to Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been sent to President K R Narayanan.

Banerjee said she would leave for Delhi tomorrow to participate in the government formation process but did not specify on the possibility of her party's joining the National Democratic Alliance.

We are supporting the Vajpayee government and have decided to join the ministry, so it does not make any difference whether we are joining the NDA, she observed.

To a question on what if the President makes it mandatory for joining the government, she said we are prepared to do anything to install a stable and able government at the Centre.
