BJP wins 22 seats; Congress gets 7

The Bharatiya Janata Party has swept Delhi as counting picked up tempo for the 13th Lok Sabha today. The party has also made impressive gains in Haryana.

However, the party has suffered reverses in Punjab, where the Congress is making significant gains.

Contrary to expectations, the Congress seems to be surging ahead in Karnataka. It may also improve its tally in Madhya Pradesh if the present leads are any indication.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has so far won 22 Lok Sabha seats while the Congress has bagged seven. The Left Front and others have won one seat each.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has won the Lucknow seat with a massive margin.

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani has won the Gandhinagar seat.

Former Union finance minister Manmohan Singh has lost the Delhi South seat by over 30,000 votes.

Vijay Goel, Anita Arya and Jagmohan (all BJP) have been declared elected from Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Delhi seats respectively.

The lose of Karol Bagh is a major setback for the Congress as it had won only that seat in the 1998 Lok Sabha election.

The BJP has also won the Panaji, Ahmedabad and Coimbatore seats. The party has also won both the Goa seats.

The Congress has bagged the Ernakulam seat.

The Trinamul Congress has bagged the Shampur seat.

The BJP is leading in 147 Lok Sabha seats while the Congress is leading in 93. Others are leading in 26 seats.

Dr Subramanian Swamy (Janata Party), sitting member, has been trounced in the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency. He secured just 21,000 votes.

In Bangalore North, former Union minister C K Jaffer Sharief is leading by 13,599 votes.

In Bombay South Central, Mohan Rawle of the Shiv Sena leads by 15,143 votes over Majid Memon of the Samajwadi Party at the end of the 5th round of counting.

Murli Deora of the Congress leads by 1,743 votes over Jaywantiben Mehta (BJP) at the end of the third round of counting in Bombay South.

V S Sivakumar (Congress) is leading by 10,295 votes over his nearest Communist Party of India rival Kaniyapuram Ramachandran, when 76 per cent of the votes were counted in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency.

Baddam Bal Reddy of the BJP is leading by 29,887 votes over his nearest Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen rival Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi in Secunderabad.

Jaibhan Singh Pavaiya of the BJP leads by more than 50,000 votes over Chandra Mohan Nagori of the Congress in Gwalior.

Prasanna Kumar Patsani of the Biju Janata Dal was leading by over 13,000 votes over his nearest rival Bibhuti Bhusan Singh Mardaraj of the Congress in the Bhubaneswar parliamentary constituency.

In Chandigarh, Krishan Lal Sharma of the BJP was trailing by 3,275 votes over his nearest rival Pawan Kumar Bansal of the Congress.

In Tripura East (reserved), Bajuban Reang of the CPI-M was leading by 4,000 votes over his nearest rival Jishnu Debbarma of the BJP.

In Calcutta South, Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamul Congress was leading by 14,124 votes over her nearest rival Suvankar Chakravarty of the CPI-M.

In Bhopal, Union Minister Uma Bharti of the BJP was leading by more than 20,000 votes over her nearest rival Suresh Pachouri of the Congress.

Congress candidate M O H Farooq is leading by 9,792 votes over his nearest Pattali Makkal Katchi rival M Ramdoss in the lone Lok Sabha seat in Pondicherry.

In the Bombay North East parliamentary constituency, Gurudas Kamat of the Congress is leading by over 2,868 votes after the first round of counting.

In Karnal, Bhajan Lal of the Congress was trailing by 37,360 votes over his nearest rival I D Swami of the BJP.

Manohar Joshi of the Shiv Sena is leading by over 6,821 votes in the Bombay North Central Lok Sabha constituency after the first round of counting.

In Calcutta South, Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamul Congress was leading by 14,124 votes over her nearest rival Suvankar Chakravarty of the CPI-M.

In Karnal, Bhajan Lal of the Congress was trailing by 37,360 votes over his nearest rival I D Swami of the BJP.

Reoti Raman Singh (Samajwadi Party) is ahead of his nearest rival Dr M M Joshi (BJP) by 369 votes.

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK is leading in two seats while the CPI-M and the BJP are leading in one each.

In Andhra Pradesh, the BJP and the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen are leading in one seat each.

In Punjab, the Shiromani Akali Dal is leading in two seats while the Congress is ahead in one.

In Maharashtra, the Congress and the Shiv Sena are leading in two each.

In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP is leading in three seats.

Reports of Congress president Sonia Gandhi trailing in Bellary have now declared incorrect. Sushma is said to be decked up at the BJP office in Bellary, and is looking very confident

Rasa Singh Rawat (BJP) is leading over sitting Congress MP Prabha Thakur by more than 30,000 votes in Ajmer.

Bandaru Dattatreya (BJP) is leading by 20,722 votes over his nearest Congress rival Nadendla Bhaskar Rao in Secunderabad.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is leading in two constituencies while the Congress and the Samajwadi Party in one each.

In Bhopal, Uma Bharti (BJP) was leading by 10,000 votes over nearest rival Suresh Pachori (Congress).

Sitting BJP MP Gidhari Lal Bhargava was leading by 1,03,000 votes over his nearest rival Raghu Sharma of the Congress in Jaipur.

DMK candidate Murasoli Maran is leading by 7000 votes over his nearest rival in the Madras Central constituency.

According to unofficial sources, Maran is leading by over 1,41,386 votes.

Civil Aviation Minister Anant Kumar (BJP) is leading over his nearest Congress rival B K Hariprasad by over 2,000 votes in Bangalore South.

Sukhbir Singh Badal (SAD) is leading by 2,000 votes over his nearest rival Jagmeet Singh Brar (Congress) in Faridkot.

Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi (MIM) is leading by 1,000 votes over his nearest BJP rival B Bal Reddy (BJP) in Hyderabad.

Murli Deora (Congress) is leading in Bombay South.

Prabha Thakur (Congress) is leading in Ajmer.

CPI-M candidate P Mohan is leading by 16,486 votes over his nearest DMK rival Pon Muthuramalingam in the Madurai constituency when the second round of counting was completed.

DMK's T R Baalu has won the Madras South constituency.
