Low turnout, violence mar Anantnag poll

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Polling in the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, which began this morning under tight security, was marred by incidents of violence and low voter turnout.

Militants have launched a rocket attack in village Mamender Shopian causing injuries to three soldiers.

A powerful bomb has exploded in a higher secondary school at Lettur resulting in injuries to five persons who were rushed to a hospital.

Low voting percentages have been reported from several booths in the constituency causing anxiety among the administration.

A majority of the polling booths are deserted in the constituency where former Union home minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is neck and neck with his National Conference rival Ali Mohammad Naik.
