13 killed in final phase of polling

A Rashtriya Janata Dal leader was gunned down in Madhepura while nine security personnel were ambushed in insurgency-hit Assam and Tripura as the fifth phase of the 13th Lok Sabha elections today claimed 13 lives.

Five policemen were killed in Assam, seven people including four paramilitary in Tripura and nine people were injured in blasts in Bengal. RJD block president Kailash Gupta was shot dead allegedly by Janata Dal-United supporters at Chausa in Madhepura parliamentary constituency where RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and JD-U president are fighting the election.

JD-U MLA Hemendra Narain Yadav was detained in connection with the incident, the police said.

The outlawed All Tripura Tiger Force militants ambushed a Central Reserve Police Force patrol, killing four jawans and two civilians on the spot at Girish Chandra Karbari Para in Dhalai district of Tripura, George C Podipara, CRPF inspector general, said.

An ATTF militant was killed in an exchange of fire with the CRPF. The ATTF and another banned militant outfit, the Liberation Front of Tripura, had given poll boycott calls.

Suspected United Liberation Front of Assam militants killed five policemen, including two Home Guards, early today in Hahsora polling booth ofbarpeta parliamentary constituency while a constable was kidnapped in Tinsukia district where they took away poll materials from three booths, P V Sumant, director general of police, said.

Nine people, including a women voter, were injured in Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency in Bengal. Miscreants hurled bombs at a booth in North 24 Parganas district this morning injuring five people while four others were injured in similar incidents in the same constituency, the police said. A polling official received head injuries when some unidentified people lobbed bombs on the tiled roof of a booth in Barrackpore last night.
